The Fall Classic @ Hobart and William Smith College

On the weekend of November 12th and 13th the University of Rochester Debate Union made an abnormally short trek to Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, New York for the Fall Classic debate tournament. The Fall Classic is a Worlds/British parliamentary debate tournament with 6 preliminary rounds followed by a Novice Final, Semi Finals and a Final. In a field of 36 teams (debate partnerships of 2 debaters each) from schools including Brandeis, Yale, Cornell, Patrick Henry, Ohio Wesleyan, Adelphi University, and University of Pennsylvania, the University of Rochester did quite well. URDU was represented by 4 novice debaters Isabel Schloss partnered with Sankalp Ranthour, and Josh Rose partnered with Zachary Taylor along with their coach, Alia Bellwood, who judged.

At the previous tournament of University of Vermont the team of Rose and Taylor broke to the Novice Final and continued that success at this year’s Fall Classic by not only breaking, again, to the Novice Final but also by finishing the tournament as the Second place Novice Team after the final motion of “This House Supports the use of drone strikes in the war on terror” where they debated as the First Government team.

All URDU debaters at the Fall Classic, this year, are freshman students who have shown a great amount of enthusiasm in debate practices and at tournaments which is really paying off as they each continue to show marked improvement. The University of Rochester is well represented by the creativity, critical thinking and hard work that these students exhibit in the larger debate community.

The Debate Topics at this year’s Fall Classic:

Rd. 1 This House Believes that some people should be given financial incentive to not have children.
Rd. 2 This House Would actively foment [encourage, to make more likely] revolution in Syria.
Rd. 3 This House Supports the reintroduction into classrooms of censored versions of books that have
been banned due to objectionable content.
Rd. 4 This House Supports the use of drug tourism by developing countries.
Rd. 5 This House Would legalize public nudity.
Rd. 6 This House Believe That universities should prohibit relationships between professors and students
who are not in their classes.

Semi Final and Novice Final: This House Supports the use of drone strikes in the war on terror.
Final Motion: This House Would ban panhandling.

Remember: The URDU practices an open door policy! No tryouts, no experience necessary! Come debate! Regular meetings Mondays and Thursdays at 7 pm in Morey 100!
