Bard College World’s Tournament

In the first tournament for the 2015-2016 year, the URDU World’s team traveled to Bard College. Some team members went to debate, others went to judge. The long traveling period allowed team members to bond with each other. The tournament overall was a memorable one as we’ve witnessed two open teams break! The Ben Frazer-Reefat Aziz team and the Lindsay Wrobel-Katelyn Offerdahl teams both advanced to the quarterfinals, and also, the Ben-Reefat team ranked 1st out of all the World’s teams that were competing! The Lindsay-Katelyn team finished as as quarterfinalists and the Ben-Reefat finished as semifinalists! In addition, Ben Frazer finished as the 6th top speaker from the open category, and Reefat finished as the 2nd top speaker from the same category as well!

Overall, good start to our debate season competitively! Some of the motions that were displayed included (knockout rounds motions as well):

TH supports binding quotas for the redistribution of refugees for EU member states.

TH regrets the rise of hacktivism groups.

THBT bollywood actors (males and females) should refuse to endorse skin-whitening products. (Reefat’s favorite motion)

THW allow local residents to vote on what art should be placed in publicly owned spaces. (e.g.: museums, parks, galleries, etc.)

There were bagels, tacos, and pizzas served during our time at Bard. And the novice teams, even though nervous because some people were debating for the first time ever, eventually became confident in the ability to debate, which is great for all of us! Overall, a pleasant experience for all of us and we’d hope that the future tournaments would surpass this one in terms of enjoyment!
