In what could be described as a very competitive and difficult tournament, the URDU debate team from the World’s category traveled all the way to New Haven, and back, exhausted, but enlightened with great experiences. Though nobody received any significant awards in this tournament, they have ranked higher in rounds, at the very least, against teams from competitive and reputable universities such as Cornell, Harvard, Stanford, Brown, and others. The rain, the cold weather, and the wide size of the university made it a frustrating experience for the debate team at first, but then we got accustomed to these factors and had a good time.
Some of the motions included in this tournament were:
TH rejects the media’s intentional humanization of those responsible for heinous acts or crimes.
THBT the US should join the AIIB.
Given the existence of a drug that dramatically increases mental capacity, THBT universities should ban and test for student use of the drug.
THBT developed nations should pay reparations to developing nations that have experienced significant adverse consequences from climate change.
Pretty much, it was a challenging opportunity for us, but in the end, we persevered and learned through our losses! Great tournament worth going and hoping next year’s would be much better!
