University of Vermont Policy and World’s Tournament

In this spectacular tournament, the URDU decided to go all the way to Burlington, Vermont to engage in a fierce, but enjoyable tournament. There were several great outcomes, with plenty of people receiving awards, and we also had two teams, each one in the Policy and World’s categories, reach the final round! Even though we didn’t exactly get 1st place in either category, we can’t underestimate the capacity to which our debaters can reach particular goals in their minds. And with that, we can celebrate from the epic adventure to Vermont that we’ve undertaken. It was probably, overall, the best tournament, at least in terms of success, that the URDU has experienced. We’ve experienced a lot of ups and downs, but at the end of the day, the Vermont experience presented itself as superb for the typical debater who went and competed.

Here are a few of the motions that appeared in the tournament:

THBT, following the resolution of domestic armed conflicts, prominent members of groups who fought against the state should be prohibited from running for elected office (e.g. members of FARC in Colombia, the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka)

TH regrets the inclusion of religious symbols in memorial sites (ex: Crosses at Auschwitz, the cross at Ground Zero)

TH supports the universal legalization of polygamous unions
